Tuesday:) Tooling and Creating Leather Cuffs with Wendolin

9 May

Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.

Zumba, exercise bike, the bank, long walk, and other busy stuff today. But, there’s always time for Facebook. I saw a post from a local artist and friend, Wendolin Mercado. She was offering a drop-in class on making adorable leather cuffs today at 6:30 at the Art House. I always like to click share when my friends have something interesting going on. A few minutes later, Sherri Murphy replied to the post, “Toni, let’s do this.” So we did. I’m always up,for, learning something new.

Wendolin creates beautiful leather accessories and teaches classes and workshops. (Wendolin and Sherri)

Sherri, hard at work tooling and tapping.

We practiced on some scraps first, then on to the real deal.

I decided to use my personal motto for inspiration. It was fun, hammering and tapping away. You get out some good aggression that way.

Then, we gel stained and polished our pieces. Pretty cool, right?

Look how cute Sherri’s turned out. She’s pretty amazing too, but I have the cuff that says so.

Thanks Wendolin for a fun evening.

Wednesday Words of Wisdom

We are stuck with technology when all we really want is just stuff that works.
Douglas Adams

When your internet, WiFi, and television are down, you are forced to do what they did in the old days. Read a book!
Me
**************
Why is technology such a driving force in our lives? My internet went out sometime this morning. I just thought it was a local glitch and would be back up by lunch time. But nooooo! I went out for the day, had lunch with my friend, Lynda, hung out on the Square a while , then came home to no internet or television.

Lynne invited me over for dinner and we went for a very long walk. We talked and strolled. She said something profound when I said, “I’m going to be list without my television.” Her comment was, “Why don’t you read a book?” Duh! When is the last time I read a book? 1975? Just kidding, but you know what I mean.

Long and short, ATT is coming out tomorrow. But, in the meantime, I feel lost, despondent, and very annoyed. I’m writing this on my teeny tiny iPhone with my big clumsy fingers hitting all the wrong keys. When I’m done, I’m going to sit down and read the book that my friend Sean Cotter translated from the Romanian, “Blinding,” by Mircea Cartarescu.

When one door closes, another door opens, and when one technology closes, old technology, called your brain, well, that old door is always open.

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Your Comfort Zone

6 Mar

“When you stay in your comfort zone and don’t venture out, you don’t get anywhere or experience anything new.” ( or something to that effect.)
~ JoAnn Armenta
**************
Yes, JoAnn, I quoted you today. JoAnn is my sister, a couple years older and wiser, and full of words of wisdom. I often tell her, “You’re full of it!” Just kidding.

This evening, I was telling her that I had been invited to join a small neighborhood book club, and I wasn’t sure if I should should join. I know all the ladies and I adore them, but, my problem is, I’m not much of a reader. Hmmm…? You are probably wondering how I ever hope to be a world famous novelist and author if I don’t like to read. Good question. Here’s the answer…I won’t!

When Jo mentioned that she regrets staying in her comfort zone and not venturing out, I immediately thought, first of all, that’s a great quote and I’m going to steal it, then I realized that I do the same thing.

After I hung up the phone, I replied to the email that invited me to join the book club with a resounding, “Yes, I’d be honored.” Now, I have to go find the book, “Beautiful Ruins,” by Jess Walter. My library has it on disks, but 11 disks! I’m one of those people that can’t listen to audio books because I can’t sit still, so twelve hours of someone talking at me ain’t gonna work.

So, if you’ve read the book already, let me know if you liked it. (Also, if I could borrow it. Ha, ha!) And, if you didn’t like it, just keep that to yourself. I’m easily desuaded. Thanks!
