Friday:) February’s Frigid Temps Forces Artist to Stay Home and Paint

9 Feb

” When the going gets tough and cold, the tough and smart artist stays home and paints. Well, most of the time.”

This freezing weather here in North Texas has put a damper on my galavanting and procrastinating. Just a few days ago, it was in the 80’s and I barely saw the inside of my house. The last couple of days has been so cold…how cold was it Miss Toni? Well, suffice to say, St. Francis still had his winter coat and hat on when I walked today.

So, here is how my day went. I bundled up and walked the dog this morning. It was about 25 degrees.

I went to the 11:30 zumba class at the YMCA and rode the exercise bike for 25 minutes-5 miles, then stopped at the new Kroger on the way home. Butter was on sale $1.99 a pound. Can’t pass that up with Valentine cupcake season just around the corner.

Once I got home and had some lunch, Bella stared at me with those big ol’ eyes and wanted to walk again. I think she forgot it was so cold. So, off we went, through the park and around the pond. Then, I dropped her off and walked for another couple of miles, very briskly, I may add.

All that cold air, adrenaline and Catholic guilt forced me to stay home and be productive. The choices were laundry, housework, vacuuming, and tedious stuff like that OR do something creative like painting wine glasses. I chose the latter. My house is a mess, but I have a mess of beautiful wine glasses instead.

More discarded glassware transformed into treasures. My dear friend, Mr. Jerry, gave me a whole big box of wine glasses, martini glasses and misc. glassware a few months back when he was cleaning out his curio cabinet. He knew that I would turn them into something special. (Thanks Mr. Jerry)

Here they are. What do you think?

Three walks, zumba class, 5 miles on the bike, and ten hand-painted wine glasses. That’s a slow day for me.

TA DA…….

Wednesday:) What’s Cookin’ Miss Toni?

“Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors – it’s how you combine them that sets you apart.”

I like this quote. Not only is cooking like painting, but with me, I also paint my wine glasses and vases and then cook them. I like to cook and bake and paint. A win-win.

A while back, I painted a couple of martini glasses for my friend Jerry. He collects martini glasses. So, I thought for Christmas, I’d give a couple of matching wine glasses. I had already painted two, which were the prototype or practice before I painted the fancy martini glasses. But, I was afraid that if I gave those two away, I’d forget how I painted them for future reference, so I painted a few more to have in my collection.

I finished painting late last night, or rather, early this morning. They needed to air dry a while, and they are in the oven now. Heat setting at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Besides painting and baking, I also did a little cooking. I love to cook. Really, I do. I’m not fond of the clean up, but that’s all part of the experience. I had a few girlfriends over for lunch today, and I’ll admit I tend to go a little overboard.

I prepared a build your own taco buffet extravaganza. It’s difficult to know what everyone likes, so it’s best to let them help themselves. Do you think this was enough for four ladies?

Of course, the special secret ingredient to any Mexican meal is Bernard’s world famous salsa. David and Michele Bernard are not only good friends, but they make the best salsa that I’ve ever had. With all this food, needless to say, there were a few leftovers.
