Thursday:) Thrift Store This to Treasured That

8 Feb

“Take something old and discarded, give it love and attentions, and create a beautiful work of art. The same goes for people, places, and things.”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

I like to scour through thrift stores searching for special glassware to paint. I’m always on the look out for large bowls to paint for the Empty Bowls charity event in the spring. Sometimes the cost at the thrift store is a bit pricey for a used discarded item, and often times marked even more than it would cost new. But, I like to hunt for an old discarded item and transform it into a beautiful new treasure.

I’m not sure what this large glass bowl was in it’s previous life. Maybe a chip and dip bowl, who knows. This was my challenge. Did it want to have bluebonnets or roses painted on it? The flowing low horizontal shape of the glass asked for bluebonnets. (My projects talk to me, but only if I ask a question.)

This is what the wanted to look like…

A little paint, a little love, and now someone’s discarded bowl will be someone’s treasure. Not to mention, it will raise a little money for Empty Bowls on May 16.

Wednesday:) What’s Cookin’ Miss Toni

21 Sep

“The best things in life are a warm smile, an honest heart, homemade gifts, hugs and kisses, and warm just out of the oven brownies.”

My house smells of freshly baked brownies. Mmmm! My oven is well loved and gets a lot of use. So, what’s been cookin’, you ask. Well, I’ve been doing some baking. Yesterday, it was handpainted wine glasses, champagne flutes and vases. Yes, I bake them in the oven. It helps to heat set them. I was experimenting with some new painting techniques and trying to come up with something turquoise.

I thought a beach scene, perhaps.

A couple of champagne flutes. Hmmm?

I experimented with some frosted glass and silver Sharpie pen. Not bad?

A monochromatic vase?

But, my very favorite thing to bake in the oven is….. Drum roll please…..yes! Brownies.

The kitchen smells divine. I’m baking some brownies for Miss Sandy down the street. She had surgery yesterday, and hopefully she is home, resting, and feeling good enough to have a brownie. I upsurge hope so.

The brownies are still warm, but I’m pretty cool!

Friday Frienday:) Every Day is Frienday

21 Nov

“When you start to do the things that you truly love, it wouldn’t matter whether it is Monday or Friday; you would be so excited to wake up each morning to work on your passions.” ― Edmond Mbiaka

***************

Did you ever notice that if you remove the “en” from Freinday that you have Friday? Yah, me neither, until now. Today was a Friday Frienday. Some of the ladies from The Unbiological Sisterhood Meetup group stopped by my house today after their field trip to the Vintage Market at Meyers Park. I wanted to show off and share my handpainted glassware, ornaments, and artwork. Of course, I made brownies and a funny face.

They looked and tasted much better after it was mixed and baked.

I gave the ladies a tour of my house, my artwork and the infamous “crap room”, it is kinda scary in there. But, they loved my painted glassware and ornaments and we talked about putting together a class so I could teach them to paint wine glasses. ( I just love it when people want to learn to paint.) They always say, “But, I don’t know how to paint.” And I tell them, “That’s OK, I’m an amazing teacher.” Funny, but true.

A few of the gals who stopped by.

Then, we all went over to Blue Olive for lunch afterwards. I came home, packaged up my leftover brownies and took the rest to my neighbors. I like to share. Then, I went for a walk. Fun Friday Frienday!

I should be painting and glittering ornaments, but hey, it’s Friday. That means it’s Black Russian Friday. Some things are more important.

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Tenacious Tuesday

27 Mar

Patience and tenacity are worth more than twice their weight of cleverness.
Thomas Huxley

I like to think of myself as a tenacious person, but only in the positive, fun-lovin’ kinda way. The Webster definition is pretty accurate. I believe in a strong cohesive family. When I make a friend, we are not easily pulled apart. I tend to be a little clingy, quite persistent, and always seem to be in search of something valued. (I just haven’t found it yet.)

tenacious: te·na·cious\tə-ˈnā-shəs\
adjective
1 a : not easily pulled apart : cohesive
b : tending to adhere or cling especially to another substance
2 a : persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired

b : retentive

synonyms see strong

My tenacity often gets me into trouble, but sometimes it’s a source of serendipitous good fortune. In other words, I tend to talk to strangers and have made some great friends as a result.

Today, I was meeting my Facebook friend Linda for coffee at Snug on the Square? She wanted to see some of my hand painted wine glasses and ornaments, so I brought a few examples and some photos to show her. A lady came in and sat alone at the table next to us. She noticed the glittery ornaments and leaned over and said, “Those are beautiful.” Linda turned around and said, “You should see these wine glasses and vases.”

We invited Jane to join us. We made our introductions and chatted a while. A few minutes later, Jane’s friend Sherry arrived and joined us. Linda left for an appointment, and Jane, Sherry, and I were immersed in conversation when another of her friends, Vicky walked in. To make a long story even longer, four complete strangers spent over an hour exchanging stories and becoming friends. Jane mentioned that she had always wanted to learn to paint, but was too afraid. I invited her to join our senior art group at Towne Creek on Fridays. She was thrilled. We exchanged emails and phone number, vowing to keep in touch, and Jane plans on coming to our art group.

Sometimes a tenacious hello and serendipitous meeting leads to meeting interesting people and making new friends. Just call me Tenacious Toni!
