Frustrating Friday:) Holy “You Gotta Be Kidding” Honda Dealer and My Firefighters

19 Oct

“Do I look stupid? Don’t answer that, please.”

~ Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

***************************

I got up bright and early to walk the dog and get over to the Honda dealer for a scheduled oil change. That yellow wrench light on the dash had been on for a couple of weeks. I had received a coupon in the mail for $10 off a maintenance appointment. Good timing. It was a beautiful cool sunshiny morning.

When I pulled into the service bay, the advisor was very prompt and courteous. I said that I had an appointment and a coupon for my oil change. He said great, and it would be about an hour, and he’d text me when my car was ready.

I decided to walk across the street to the Whataburger and get an iced tea, better than sitting in the crowded waiting room. I wasn’t tempted by the free coffee and sugar cookies. And, without fail, the advisor always comes in with a clipboard with all the other suggested services that your car really desperately needs.

I was sitting there at Whataburger with my iced tea, checking emails, when I received the text. OH MAN! There was a litany of suggested maintenance tasks that needed attention. I texted back, “NO THANK YOU. JUST THE OIL CHANGE.”

Is it just me, or do they make up stuff because I’m a woman, and an old woman, to boot? Would they pull that stuff on a man? The reason I was really skeptical was because the paperwork said I needed new rear tires. I got four brand new tires at a different place about a year ago. It also said my battery failed the load test. Now, that’s a load of …. I also got a new battery from AAA not that long ago. The list went on and on. My car only has 42,000 miles on it. Really?

My oil change with super duper coupon discount was only $42.18. That’s ALL I paid. If I would have agreed to the suggested maintenance…. an additional $1,159.09 was the estimate. You do the math. Over $1,000 in additional service!!! I DON’T THINK SO!!!! I declined. Do I look stupid…? Don’t answer that.

OK, that’s my rant for today. It was just a little annoying, probably because I used to fall for that stuff. Not anymore.

Afterwards, I had time to run a few errands and get over to the YMCA in time for my Zumba class, then ride the stationary bike for 2 1/2 miles. Then, a quick stop at Fire Station 5 to take some cookies. Miss Pat takes several plates of cookies to karaoke on Thursday night, and I get to take the leftover cookies to the fire station Friday morning.

I took brownies over to station 9 on Tuesday. See, these guys are so skinny. They need brownies and cookies.

It was a good day, and it’s Friday. Yay! Black Russian Friday just minutes away.

Happy Friday, my friends.

Friday:) Finest Friends and a Few Firemen

I always feel so blessed to share my many adventures with new and old friends. This week has been filled with adventures. Dinners and lunches and a concert. Every Monday is the country dance at the senior center and lots of new friends there. And, Thursday night is karaoke at Delaney’s.

Look who came to karaoke last night…Frinchie and Lynn, my church friends.

Then, an impromptu lunch with the TOTS (Table Of Talented Sisters) is always a blast. I need a selfie stick or a longer arm.

Now, last but not least, my special firemen friends. Miss Pat always tells me to take her cookies that she brings to karaoke over to my fire station if there are any left over. She always brings a ton, so there are usually plenty left over. They always appreciate the sweet treats and thoughts that go along with the visit.

Thank you Station 9. Thank you Miss Pat…aka the Cookie Lady.

Happy Friday, my friends.

Friday:) Freezing Cold, Fun with Belle, No Firemen

7 Dec

“So when you’re cold

From the inside out

And don’t know what to do,

Remember love and friendship,

And warmth will come to you.”

― Stephen Cosgrove

Wow! It’s been pretty cold here. It got all the way up to 23 degrees earlier. Tonight will get down to around 15. (Can you say shiver me timbers?) I took Elvis out for a walk this afternoon. Not the real Elvis, of course. Elvis, is a dog. He tugs on his leash like the real Elvis tugs on your heart.

I don’t know what I was thinking. The sun was out for a few hours, but that didn’t stop my hands from getting numb. I think I’m spoiled living in Texas. It can get pretty cold there too, but for a few minutes.

Even though it’s cold out, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is being with family, friends, but most of all… quality Gamma time.

It’s Friday already. Where did the time go? I hope to keep up with my traditions while I’m here. I’m going to visit with my sister a few days, I sure hope she has the fixings for my Black Russians, otherwise we’re going to have to run to the store…liquor store, that is.

I’m also going to miss my Fire Station 9 friends back home. I did stop there with some brownies and taco fixings right before I left. I’ll just have to bake and make up for lost time when I get back home.

Happy Friday, my Friends. Stay warm wherever you are,

Friday:) Fun Friends, Fancy Footwork, and More Firemen

“If I could just squeeze in a few more hours in the day, I’d have a lot more fun. Where does the time go?”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

**************************

Its almost 11 pm, and my boots have been hittin’ the ground running all day. Well, I take that back. I don’t wear boots, I can’t run with my bad knee, but I’ve been scootin’ around town all day.

I started off getting up early to pick up Bella, my doggie friend, and taking her for a walk. Then, take a batch of brownies to Miss Kathy across the street, make another two batches of brownies for the bake sale at St. Gabe’s, and my fire station friends. While the brownies baked, I mixed up some chocolate frosting.

We had a birthday lunch for Miss Sherry at 12:30, so I packed up my presents, grabbed my container of brownies for Fire Station 9, and was out the door just a little past noon.

I took a batch to the guys on Tuesday before Halloween, and asked them to save my container. Captain Floyd was kind enough to return the container to me this morning, so I took an another batch over at noon, right out of the oven. I put a sticky note on it that said, “If you save this container, I’ll keep refilling it.”

Off to lunch with the TOTS, the Table Of Talent Sisters. These girls have been with me through thick and thin, literally. It was Sherry’s birthday. I just noticed, I’m the only one without glasses. I should have put on my glasses. Love these girls.

After lunch, I stopped at Walmart on my way home to get a new battery for my car key fob. The light on my dashboard kept flashing “CHANGE BATTERY ON KEY FOB!” Ok, already.

I got home a little after 4, and still had to frost a few more brownies and pack them up and get them over to church before 5. Yikes! I got there at 4:58. I took six containers of brownies.

Back in the car and hurry home, walk the dog quick, change, curl my hair, and get over to pick up Miss Pat for dinner at Braum’s by 6, and meet Doug for dinner, then go to the Friday night dance at the senior center. Yikes! Made it.

The dance was fun. The first Friday of the month, they have a live band, City Lights. It’s a country band with a Little Rock and Roll thrown in every now and then. I’m starting to learn a few more line dancing steps. Slowly but surely. Lots of cowboy hats. You’d think we were in Texas, or somethin’.

I finally got home around 10pm. I called my sister, after missing her calls earlier. I was all discumbobbled and running on adrenaline. After a couple minutes talking, I stood up while I was talking to her and was looking all over for my cell phone. Did I leave it in the car? I thought, “Darn, I just cancelled my home land-line phone, so how am I going to call my cell to find out where it is?” Then, I realized, “What are you talking on SILLY?”

Yep! A little too much crazy busy. But I love it. Now, to fix my Friday night Black Russian. Cheers!

Friday:) Fireside Chat

24 Feb

“We remember though all the firelit glow

Of a great hearth’s gleam and glare,

And we looked for a space at each happy face

And the love that was written there.”

Caris Brooke

**************

I’m sitting down in the foyer at Mom’s condo, next to the cozy fireplace.

I thought, what a perfect place to write, and what a perfect topic for Friday. A fireside chat. Some of you may remember from history, FDR’s fireside chats, or some of you may have heard them on the radio yourself. Radio? What is a radio?

Hers a great FDR quote. “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Today was another busy day, cleaning, sorting, running to the bank, cemetery, monument place, the store and lunch. I asked my sister if I could, “Please, please, please, get some Chicago pizza for lunch.” I’ll be back in Texas tomorrow and will miss the pizza. She humored me and I ate half a pizza. Oh, so good right out of the brick oven.

It’s been a long, busy, sad, painful, happy, grateful, bitter-sweet few weeks. All I can say is, I am truly blessed.

Happy Friday!

Friday:) A Fine Day and Fine Friends, Furry and Otherwise

21 Jan

“When you start to do the things that you truly love, it wouldn’t matter whether it is Monday or Friday; you would be so excited to wake up each morning to work on your passions.” ― Edmond Mbiaka

***************

Wow! A fabulous Friday here in McKinney. The sun was shining, and I was out walking little Bella, no jacket needed. The temps were in the upper 60’s, maybe more. Is this really January?

My little furry friend was just as happy as I was to be strolling through the sunny park.

After our late afternoon walk, I dropped Bella off back home, and continued my walk around the neighborhood. I had a feeling that Ms. Sandy and Mr. Larry would be sitting in their usual spot in the garage, waiting for Miss Toni to pass by.

Yep, there they were, and Mr. Joe from across the street was sitting in MY chair. Oh no! He jumped up really quick, beer in hand. I found a pink folding chair behind the tall red toolbox and assured Joe that I was fine. I nonchalantly walked over to the well stocked fridge and grabbed a beer, plopping myself down next to big ol’Wolf, (he’s a dog, not a wolf) making myself at home. A fine way to finalize a fun Friday.

CHEERS!!!

The time flew by and before I knew it, the sun went down, and it was time for me to stagger home. Just kidding. I only had one beer. But as I strolled home, I couldn’t help but smile and think how blessed I am. I had a good day, I have good friends, I live in a great neighborhood, and there are a lot of people out there that truly care about me.

I hope you had a great Friday too.

Friday:) Funny Faces and Family Forever

11 Jun

The face is a picture of the mind with the eyes as its interpreter.” ― Marcus Tullius Cicero

******************
I hope I never get too old to make funny faces in silly places with friends and family. I don’t know what we did before the selfie…I have NO SELFIE CONTROL. I’m a firm believer that laughter is the best medicine and being silly keeps us young. I learned that from my mom, the queen of silly.

I tried to take a selfie with Mom, and she said “No more selfies!” So, I took a picture of her trying to stop my silliness.

It’s Friday night folks! Time for funny faces and Black Russians..

Happy Friday!
