Sunday Sermom:) Carry Your Cross and Wave Your Flag

5 Sep

“Only those who are truly aware of their sin can truly cherish grace.”

― C.J. Mahaney

A beautiful Sunday morning here in McKinney Texas. I love greeting and saying “Good morning” before 9 o’clock Mass. The familiar faces and cheery smiles make a perfect start to a perfect day.

In today’s Gospel, we are told that hating anyone will not allow us to be disciples of Jesus. We must carry our own cross, and plan for our eternal salvation.

My take on it…All our actions and thoughts and deeds must be carefully thought out and planned. Whatever our “cross to carry” in life, it all will be tallied and evaluated at the final judgement.

Luke 14

“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,

and even his own life,

he cannot be my disciple.

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me

cannot be my disciple.

Which of you wishing to construct a tower

does not first sit down and calculate the cost

to see if there is enough for its completion?

With the Labor Day weekend and 9/11 next week, it’s inspiring to see the flags flying everywhere. As I was leaving St. Gabriel’s this morning, I turned to look at the flags whirling in the wind. The cross above the church in the background made me think that God, flag and country are all intertwined.
