Friday:) Black Russian Friday Song

8 Aug

“If you can’t find a song to fit your theme, make one up yourself.”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

**************************

Not much exciting going on here today. But, it’s Friday and you know what that means? Yep! Black Russian Friday. In an effort to be creative, I decided to compose a song for the occasion. OK, I stole the music from Henry Mancini and lyric ideas from Johnny Mercer. (MOON RIVER PARODY) But, I did think of the idea and sang it myself, and well before I started drinking. Just sayin’.

BLACK RUSSIAN

Black Russian, how you make me smile

I’m sipping you in style, today.

Oh drink maker, and cocktail shaker

Whatever you’re mixin’, I’m goin’ your way.

Two liquors, here inside my glass

You’ll knock me on my…( fill in the blank) just see

We’re after the same tasty blend, waiting round the bend,

My Russian cocktail friend, Black Russian, and me.

CHEERS, MY FRIENDS?

Friday Night Flights of Fancy

1 Aug

“Flying starts from the ground. The more grounded you are, the higher you fly.”

― J.R. Rim

*********

My days are filled with friendship, family and gratitude, and my Friday night always ends with a yummy chocolate ice cream Black Russian. This isolation and pandemic nightmare keeps us apart, but we have technology to keep us connected.

The early afternoon was a little cooler today, after a refreshing late night rain, so I went for a lovely walk around the pond. This beautiful bird was floating around the edge, I think it’s a crane? It made me think how lucky he is to fly and have that freedom.

LET YOUR HEART TAKE WING

A bird in flight, both day and night

What freedom that must bring.

To soar above, to fall in love

And let your heart take wing.

~ Toni Armenta Andrukaitis ( I just made this up on the spot. Pretty cool, huh?) I love impromptu poetry. How about you? I could write about a shoe. (Rhyme time- and I haven’t even started drinking yet. I’m just silly)

My day was so exciting that I took a nap in the early evening. Not that I was tired, I was just bored and it was hot and muggy. (Now, I’ll be up all night.)

But, it’s Friday night and time for my traditional Black Russian Friday.

Cheers, my friends.

Friday From My Quarantined Kitchen

23 May

“Show me a clean perfectly tidy kitchen, and I’ll show you a boring empty home.”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

**************************

My kitchen is not only where I cook, but it’s where I dance, and sing, and bake and dream. And, because my small kitchen is open and visible to the family room’s TV, occasionally I wash dishes during commercials. I call it commercial cleaning.

I’m sure that most people know that the kitchen is the heart of the home, so if the kitchen is too tidy all the time, there’s something wrong there.

I was admiring all my memorabilia around my kitchen today. I proudly display my Mother’s Day gifts from the grandchildren.

Belle drew me a beautiful picture with sparkle paint. I told her that I saw a grandma holding a baby and she said, “NO! It’s a dragon!” Oops, my mistake. (Do you see the mother and child? Maybe you see the dragon.)

My fridge has a wonderful display of family photos and special memories.

My windows are flanked and counters filled with artwork and gifts from friends and family that must be showcased and displayed. These things make me smile every day.

There are dishes in the sink, dirty pots and pans still on the stove, oops, and an empty wine glass, but how blessed am I!

Happy Quarantined Black Russian Friday, my friends.

PS. The store was out of my chocolate almond milk. Had to make my own.

Cheers!

Friday:) Fourth Day of Elvis on the Shelvis and More

14 Dec

“You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight.”

― Elizabeth Gilbert

Day 4~ ELVIS ON THE SHELVIS

It’s Friday night date night with Barbie on the Shelvis, too.

It was a nice sunny day here in Elgin. My sister and I went for a morning walk, and were bundled up enough to enjoy the trek. I continued a solo walk after she put in her time. I walked the neighborhood for a couple of miles. I even ran into Shaun, the mailman, who said, “Hey, if I knew you were out walking this long, you could have helped me deliver all this mail.”

The squirrels were out in full force today. I guess they we’re gathering nuts for the winter, so I had to be careful not to be captured by a band of bold renegade squirrels. I’ve been called a nut on more than one occasion.

My sister and I went to Walmart in the afternoon to pick up a few last minute things. I NEEDED chocolate almond milk and ice cream for Black Russian Friday. We roamed around the store for nearly an hour, and picked up a bunch of things, and we were in the long checkout line when I realized, “No chocolate almond milk. No ice cream. That’s what we came for!” I ran, literally, all the way to the other end of the store to the dairy section. Got ’em!

Happy Black Russian Friday, my friends.

Friday:) A Feather, Fall Weather, and A Black Russian

13 Oct

~”Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

~F. Scott Fitzgerald

******************

Fall has fluttered in like a fluffy feather, heavy with raindrops. The steamy summer heat has slithered away, but the constant rain has put a gloomy damper on these October days.

I always smile when I find a feather along my way. Perhaps a message from an angel. “Feathers appear when angels are near.”

Such a dreary day. A good day for a movie, Olive Garden soup and salad, a misty walk in the rain and my traditional Friday night Black Russian.

Ah, Friday at last.

Happy Friday, my friends.

Frugal Friday, Faith, and Fixin’ to Fix My Famous Black Russian

29 Sep

“Can anything be so elegant as to have few wants, and to serve them one’s self?”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

***********************

It was a strange misty morning. I walked the dog, then went for a long walk by myself. It was only in the 60’s, (yay) so I wore a sweater. Later, I went to the bank and stopped at Papa Murphy’s Pizza to say hi to Miss Karri, then to Tom Thumb for a few groceries on sale. Yes, eggs were on sale for 69 cents a dozen. I go through a lot with my brownies and cupcakes. Then, they had those cute grape tomatoes for $1 a container. Well, I could go on… I only buy things on sale, unless it’s an emergency. I AM FRUGAL.

I hadn’t eaten all day, so McDonald’s was right across the parking lot. I love my McD app that has all kinds of fun coupons and discounts. Today, I ordered a crispy chicken sandwich for $1. Yes! Can you believe it? It was very good.

I could have gone to a fancy restaurant and spent $20 on a mediocre lunch, but I like to save my time and money for special occasions and to be with special friends. When I’m alone, $1 sandwich is just fine, and it’s fast, and it’s cheap… I mean frugal. Actually, there was 8cents tax. So, it was really $1.08 for lunch.

After my gourmet lunch, I decided to stop in at St. Gabriel’s for Friday Adoration and to light a candle. Today, I decided that instead of praying for a specific intention or person or concern, I was just going to spend a few minutes in church just to say, “Thank you!” I am very thankful for my many blessings. The sanctuary was empty and I was alone to light my candle and say a prayer. It was very peaceful.

Then, I walked into the back chapel where The Eucharist was on display for Adoration. There were about half a dozen people there in quiet meditation. I really admire people who take time out to give thanks, pray for others, and show respect for their faith. It’s a good thing.

I came home, walked the dog again, and another solo walk. I was in time for a beer in Mr. Larry and Miss Sandy’s garage. I told them that their house was the Beer Garden Garage. Mr. Joe from across the street was already sitting there in the extra lawn chair.

So, here I am. Fixin’ to fix my famous Friday night Black Russian.

This is how it starts, with a frozen chocolate almond ball, then some ice cream, some vodka and kahlua. It’s a scientific concoction. Not really. I just pour glugs of this and that, add some ice cream and… what’s not to like?

Happy Friday my friends.

Friday:) Friends and Some Free Stuff

9 Jun

“The best things in life are free, but when the cash register at the grocery store dings and says $0.00, I just get giddy.”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

**************************

Who doesn’t like free stuff? I was playing that Monopoly game at Tom Thumb and Market Street. Every time I shopped, I got a handful of those tiny tear along the dotted line game pieces. They are such a pain on the butt, but I collected them anyway. So, right before the game was over, I opened up each one, and checked to see if I won the million dollars,(Needless to say, I didn’t)

But, in the big pile of non-winners, there were a few coupons for some free stuff. Who doesn’t like free stuff? Oops, I said that already, didn’t I? I went up and down the aisles and found my free items.

I went to the check out, and the very nice lady rang up my purchases. I was so excited, I took her picture and thanked her for all my free stuff. “Thank you, Miss Elaine!” I’m sure she thought I was a nut. Well, I am.

Then, the register finished adding and reducing and came up with my total. $0.00. How cool is that?

That was my free stuff adventure.

This morning, I went for an hour long steamy walk. Even in the heat, I love my walks. It’s my thinking time, my praying time. This afternoon, I met my friend Linda for a long lunch on the Square. Then, home in time for Miss Pat to join me for Black Russian Friday.

It was a Good Friday. Cheers!

Friday:) Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone

26 May

“In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.”

~Benjamin Franklin

***********************

I have been blessed with the most remarkable friends. A few people from my karaoke single mingle group were kind enough to join tonight me for Black Russian Friday. They always see my Facebook posts on Friday nights drinking alone, so they asked when they could join me for a libation or two. Tonight was the night.

Jerry was the first to arrive. I always like to take a picture of my first guest.

You may not be able to see, but his shirt has tiny martini glasses on it. He is a martini guy, but sacrificed this one Friday night for a Black Russian.

It was a fun evening with great conversation, funny stories and great friendship. Yep! I have the greatest friends.

I have a feeling that my fire station will be receiving some goodies in the morning. Thanks Jerry, Sandy, Bob, Loretta, and Pat for stopping by. Miss Pat, the cookies were awesome, as usual. Thanks. Love you guys.

Friday:) Four Years Ago and Today~ Friends, Fires and Birthday Parties

1 Jul

There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.

~ Thomas Aquinas

*****************

When I checked my Facebook page today, the first thing it posted was the memory page from the past years. I’m always excited to see what I did last year or four years or six years ago on this day. I totally forgot about four years ago, on this day, I played “fireman” in my old neighborhood, when I noticed some billowing black smoke coming from next door. I tried calling the Reynold’s, but no one answered. I didn’t know if hey were home or not, and  perhaps didn’t see the smoke in their back yard. When I went over to investigate, there was a billow of black smoke and fire by the pipes and foam that housed their pool equipment. Panic! Do I call 911 and take a chance that the fire gets bigger and jumps up to the house, or reach around the corner, grab the hose and try to put it out? I chose the latter. After the smoldering stopped, I did call 911 and had them come out to check, just in case Toni, the firefighter, didn’t get it all under control.

I did a pretty good job, considering I didn’t have my Fire hat on. Nice memory. I’m glad I was around.

Now, for today. Today is my good friend Sherri Murphy’s birthday. I received a text from her this afternoon inviting me to join the family for dinner and birthday cake. That was so nice because I do feel like part of the family. Jim went with me and we had a very nice time. I brought Black Russian fixin’s. It is Black Russian Friday, after all!

Happy birthday Dherri Murphy.

Cheers!!!

And, Black Tussian Friday buddies.

Forget Black Friday:) It’s Black Russian Friday

26 Nov

Black Friday: Because only in America, people trample others for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have. ~Unknown quotes

*************

It’s true, after contemplating about all the things I have to be thankful for yesterday, I had trouble thinking that I needed to get in my car and go shopping. I’ll admit, I was tempted by all the online bargains that filled my email inbox this morning. As tempting as they were, I refrained from making any purchases. I could use a new pair of walking shoes, as mine are more then well worn and falling apart. But, I can wait. Now, is that self control, or what?

Instead, I had a leisurely morning, a long walk, a nice lunch of leftovers, visited my neighbor’s cat while she was out of town, checked on Bella, my doggie buddy after Mr. Mike had to take her for an emergency vet visit, then an evening stroll, capturing the sunset. These are the things that make me happier than Black Friday sales.

The best part though is…IT’S BLACK RUSSIAN BLACK FRIDAY! Cheers!

Amazing evening sky. This beats any shopping spree.
