Saturday:) Do as I say, not as I do.

Parents must lead by example. Don’t use the cliche; do as I say and not as I do. We are our children’s first and most important role models.

I like to think I’ve been a good role model for my two sons. I always tried to be honest, fair, loving, considerate, and they always saw me helping others. I’ve been a walker as long as I can remember. Walking is my favorite pastime, done for thinking and meditation, more than for health benefit.

Now, when it comes to healthy eating. Both sons are vegetarians, and the youngest is currently a vegan. So, somewhere along the line, they must have been looking the other way.

One of my favorite stories and memory of their childhood is when my son asked, “Mom, what’s for breakfast.?” He was maybe 8 or 9 years old. I was trying to teach independence, so I said, “Why don’t you fix your own breakfast? You can have whatever you like.” He thought he’d annoy me or persuade me to fix it for him, so he said, “I think I’ll have apple pie and ice cream for breakfast!” I put on my stern and serious mom face and said, “That sound good. Fix me a plate too.” And we did!

I wasn’t trying to teach bad eating habits, but I wanted to show them to think independently and outside the box.

So, the reason for this post. I’m visiting with Mom a few weeks. I’ve been trying to fix her healthy meals. So, when she isn’t looking, I’ve been indulging in horrible snacks and beverages, (when she’s asleep.)

For lunch, cheese puffs and Coke.

Dinner…

Black Russian and Bugles. I hope my sons don’t see this post.
